The House of Mouse has greenlit Young Jedi Adventures, a new original animated Star Wars series from Lucasfilm slated for a spring 2023 release on Disney+ and Disney Junior.

The order marks the iconic franchise’s first-ever long-form animated series aimed at a preschool and family audience. There’s no news yet on the project’s episode count, how long each story will be, and whether the series will be animated in 2D or 3D.

Set in the era known as the High Republic—centuries before the events of the first prequel movie Star Wars: The Phantom Menace—Young Jedi Adventures will track a group of Jedi-in-training (a.k.a. younglings) as they learn the ways of the Force on their path to becoming Jedi Knights. The series will explore themes of compassion, self-discipline, teamwork, patience and friendship.

Puppy Dog Pals writer Michael Olsen has been tapped as showrunner, and he’s also executive producing with Star Wars: Visions producer James Waugh. Elliot Bour (Elena of Avalor) and Lamont Magee (Green Lantern) will serve as supervising director and consulting producer, respectively. The show announcement was made over the weekend at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim.

Young Jedi Adventures comes on the heels of Lucasfilm’s partnership with Mattel for youngling-themed short-form content and toys.

More kidcos than ever are looking to reach the preschool audience with well-known brands these days, including Warner Bros. Discovery, which recently announced the first-ever Tom and Jerry and Scooby-Doo preschool series.
