Boston-based GBH Kids is working with New York Times bestselling author and Newbery Medal winner Kwame Alexander to create and produce a new multiplatform project.

As part of the development deal, Alexander is adapting his first children’s book Acoustic Rooster and his Barnyard Band for TV. He will serve as an executive producer on the show, along with Marcy Gunther, Angel Tyree and musical consultant Randy Preston from Big Sea Entertainment. Kay Donmyer (Curious George) is also on board as co-creator and head writer. It’s set to launch in 2024.

Acoustic Rooster uses the principles of jazz—improvisation, collaboration, turn-taking, sharing, listening and creativity—to solve everyday barnyard challenges. According to GBH, the show should fill a gap left by many schools in the US cutting their music education programs. And studies have shown that the arts can contribute important benefits to society, such as civil engagement and tolerance, as well as improving mental health.

The deal also includes digital games, an app, and a podcast, as well as resources for caregivers and educators.

This is the first new show GBH has announced since rejigging its children’s media and education department.
