The House of Mouse is resurrecting its ’90s animated series Gargoyles (pictured) with a live-action remake for Disney+.

Also titled Gargoyles, the new series is in early development at Disney Branded Television. Horror legend James Wan, who directed Saw and The Conjuring, is attached as executive producer through his Atomic Monster prodco. And Wan’s frequent collaborator, Gary Dauberman (It, Annabelle), is on board as a writer and executive producer.

The live-action Gargoyles centers on the last surviving gargoyle warrior, who is freed from a curse that kept him frozen in stone and must now uncover his past while protecting New York City. It’s a slight twist on the classic show, which follows a clan of gargoyles who watch over the Big Apple.

Disney Television Animation produced the original 78 x 22-minute animated series, which ran on Disney’s linear channels for three seasons from 1994 to 1997. Today, the toon is available globally on Disney+, where it remains popular. (In the US, it’s three times more in-demand than the average TV series, according to media research company Parrot Analytics, which calculates demand based on factors such as number of searches, streaming data and social media mentions.)
