Disney, Sesame Workshop and Studio AKA were among the biggest winners at tonight’s 2020 Kidscreen Awards, but Netflix’s five awards put the streamer on top at the annual event honoring the year’s best work in children’s television and digital media.
Held during Kidscreen Summit in Miami, the Kidscreen Awards were hosted by actor/comedian Emma Hunter (pictured) and exclusively sponsored by the Canada Media Fund.
Netflix originals A Series of Unfortunate Events and Angela’s Christmas each grabbed a pair of trophies—the former for Best Live-Action Series and Best In Class in Tweens/Teens Programming, and the latter for Best One-Off, Special or TV Movie and Best In Class in Kids Programming. The streamer’s fifth award went to Hilda for Best Animated Kids Series. Hilda has been racking up the awards, also recently winning best animation at the 2019 Children’s BAFTAs and a 2019 Daytime Emmy Award for outstanding main title and graphic design. Netflix’s trophy haul comes after the SVOD added 8.8 million new subscribers in Q4 amid ongoing investment in original kids programming.
As for Disney, the media conglom rode into the ceremony with the most noms (nine), bolstered by the company’s ability to submit more entries following its acquisition of 20th Century Fox last year. The House of Mouse ultimately walked away with four wins, including two for Fox series Bob’s Burgers (Best Animated Tweens/Teens Series and Best Writing), and one for Disney LatAm’s NIVIS: Amigos de Otro Mundo (Best Mixed-Media Preschool Series).
Meanwhile, preschool series Hey Duggee from Studio AKA in the UK and perennial winner Sesame Street tied for the most wins by a single series with four awards each. Hey Duggee nabbed Creative Talent awards for Voice Talent, Design and Music, as well as Best Animated Preschool Series for the second year in a row. Not to be outdone, Sesame Street followed up its Best One-Off, Special Or TV Movie win last year by claiming the category again with its When You Wish Upon a Pickle special.
In broadcasting, PBS KIDS won the coveted Channel of the Year award for the second year in a row. And the win marks the pubcaster’s sixth channel title since the Kidscreen Awards launched in 2010.
In new categories, Hopster won for Best Kids-Only Streaming Service, DreamWorksTV took the Best Kids YouTube Channel award, Baobab Studios grabbed Best Kids Game—Other for its VR title Crow: The Legend, and Melbourne’s Wabi Sabi Studios nabbed Best Kids Short Film with its stop-motion love story Lost & Found. Hopster’s win follows a significant period of growth for the UK-based SVOD that saw it launch in Africa for the first time, expand its original programming slate with empathy series Saturday Club and LGBT-focused series Rainbow Stories, plus receive a multi-million-dollar investment from edtech company Sandbox & Co.
