Brit prodco Magic Light Pictures has sold its 30-minute animated Christmas special Zog to broadcasters in Europe, Australia and Japan, where it will air on ABC (Australia), DR (Denmark) MG Alba (UK), NOGA (Israel), NRK (Norway), RTE (Ireland), SVT (Sweden), Movistar (Spain), VPRO (Netherlands), RTV (Slovenia), NHK (Japan) and FTV (France).

The one-off was also picked up by home entertainment distributors Concorde Germany, eOne (UK) and AsianA (Korea), as well as French theatrical distributor Les Films Du Preau. Magic Light is now working on building out a range of consumer products including toys, apparel, accessories and various personalized products already available on its website.

Based on the popular children’s book by writer Julia Donaldson and illustrator Axel Scheffler, Zog is about a keen but accident-prone dragon who gets into mischief at school. It premiered on BBC One on Christmas Day 2017, and was the day’s fourth highest-rated program, reaching 8.8 million viewers (including repeats).

Magic Light’s Oscar-nominated film Revolting Rhymes earned many accolades at the British Animation Awards and the International Emmy Kids Awards, and the prodco’s new animated special The Snail and the Whale, based on another book by Donaldson and Scheffler, is set to be released at the end of 2019 on BBC One and ZDF in Germany.
