Language Cultures and Communication (UG) (semester 2 2014 & 2015 University of Canberra)

This unit is a cross-disciplinary elective offered in conjunction with the Master of TESOL and FLT program. In this unit students explore the links between language culture and communication and undertake analysis of language and culture in the community. The lecture is co-taught with the Graduate unit, separate tutorials are run for Graduate and Undergraduate groups.

 

Postgraduate Teaching 2014-current

Language Teaching Methodology (Graduate) (semester 1 2015 University of Canberra)

This is the first core unit in the MA/ Grad Dip and Grad Cert in TESOL and Foreign Language Teaching. In this unit students develop their understanding of the theory and practice of language teaching. They explore theoretical underpinnings of language teaching and develop their practical application of current best practice in language teaching.

Language Cultures and Communication (Graduate) (semester 2 2014 & 2015 University of Canberra)

This unit is part of the Master of TESOL and FLT program at the University of Canberra. It is an elective unit which explores the links between language, culture and communication. It is a one-semester unit offered in Semester 2.

Dissertation in TESOL and FLT (semester 2 2014 & 2015 University of Canberra)

This unit offers students the opportunity to undertake a 12,000 word dissertation on a topic related to TESOL or Foreign Language Teaching.

Independent Study in TESOL and FLT (semester 2 2014 University of Canberra)

This unit offers students the opportunity to undertake an independent piece of work related to TESOL or FLT. The course involves a total word count of 6000 word, made up of two sections of a project. A proposal and a final report. Students can undertake a range of independent studies including curriculum evaluation, materials development, or a small research question.

Bilingual Education (semester 1, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013)

This unit is an elective offered in the MEd TESOL program and cross-listed in the MA Applied Linguistics. It offers students the opportunity to explore the theory and pedagogy involved in different forms of bilingual education around the world and to explore the ideas of bilingualism, identity and power that are inter-related within bilingual education settings.

Intercultural Language Education (semester 1, 2008, 2009)

This unit is an elective offered in the MEd TESOL program and cross-listed in the MA Applied Linguistics. It offers students the opportunity to examine intercultural language learning as a stance and to explore the links between language and culture. This unit is coordinated by A/Prof Lesley Harbon

Literacy and Language Teaching (semester 2 2009)

This unit is offered in the MEd TESOL program and offers students the opportunity to learn about second language literacy learning and teaching.

Undergraduate classes (and pre-service Graduate)

Languages Curriculum 1, 2 and 3/ Teaching Languages 1A, 2A and 3A (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014)

This series of three curriculum units are co-taught and are a core component of the Bachelor of Education/ Bachelor of Arts (Secondary ) degree and the Master of Teaching degree for students training to become teachers of languages. The three units offer students a comprehensive introduction to teaching languages in the secondary school and cover key topics such as lesson planning, designing units of work, designing assessment tasks, using ICT in the classroom, understanding language teaching pedagogy, intercultural language teaching and learning and many other topics.

Primary Languages 1 and 2 (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013)

These units are offered as electives in the 4th year of the Bachelor of Education Primary degree. Students with a language can elect to undertake these units to be able to add a language to their teaching qualification.

Education 1018 and 1019 (2008, 2009)

These units are introductory units across all of the education degrees at the University of Sydney and offer students an introduction to theories of education.
