Qing Fan, producer and content investment and co-productions exec for the Chinese online platform, is on the hunt for more diversified animation for girls ages seven to nine. She is specifically looking for series that can complement Tencent Video’s traditional princess or magic-themed shows in the demo.
The service’s kids channel targets kids ages zero to 14, with four to six and seven to nine as its core demos. Based on the early success of iconic action-adventure series Power Rangers, which Tencent acquired in 2019, Qing is also looking for more live action—a new style for the platform—for tweens and teens up to 14 years old. Fantasy/sci-fi is a genre of preference due to its growing worldwide popularity.
As for animated comedies for kids under six years old, Tencent is eyeing more non-dialogue slapstick shows because the humor in conversation-driven series often gets lost in translation for younger viewers. More universal dialogue-free comedies also decrease the need to adjust stories in China for cultural differences. For local kids toons, the platform isn’t opposed to reboots, having recently launched Shukbeta, an original CGI-animated comedy remake of a classic Chinese comic-book IP.
Qing is not interested in animated content that is heavily educational. The platform doesn’t exclude education-based shows, but stories should reflect the kids’ point of view, instead of the parents, and focus on gaining knowledge while having fun.
In terms of a partnership strategy, Tencent Video is looking for co-production and co-financing opportunities with leading animation studios and new media platforms.
