Hasbro’s eOne is jumping on the FAST channel trend and building hype around its Dungeons & Dragons brand with a new 24-hour streaming channel that’s set to launch this summer.
Dungeons & Dragons Adventures will feature original programming, content acquired from third-party creators (with a focus on live gameplay) and episodes from ’80s animated series Dungeons & Dragons (pictured, 27 x 25 minutes)—a co-pro from Marvel and Toei Animation in which a group of tweens gets stuck in the world of D&D and must play the game to find a way home.
The FAST channel is rolling out with three original live-action series. In Encounter Party, actors and improv pros role-play an original adventure; Faster, Purple Worm! Kill! Kill! sees improv actors trying to take on a massive threat as very low-level adventurer characters; and food-focused series Heroes’ Feast is all about a pair of chefs preparing meals from the Dungeons & Dragons cookbook.
FAST channels were a hot topic at MIPTV last month, and while producers at kidcos like Genius Brands International and WildBrain aren’t exactly getting rich off the new ad-supported model right now, execs have told Kidscreen that they see a lot of potential in the space.
Meanwhile, the Dungeons & Dragons brand is on a bit of a roll lately. Recent feature film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves grossed more than US$200 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. And eOne is working on a live-action D&D series for Paramount+, along with a documentary to celebrate the game’s 50th anniversary in 2024.
