London-based Sandbox Group has licensed the blue ’80s icons in a new learning app called The SmurfsEducational Games that will launch in Q4.

Smurfs brand owners IMPS and LAFIG signed off on the deal that will result in an app for the three to seven demo developed by Spanish game studio Edujoy—which Sandbox acquired in 2021.

The Smurfs franchise originally launched as a comic strip in 1958 before expanding into TV series, movies and consumer products.

The SmurfsEducational Games will feature 10 minigames built around learning fundamentals like number recognition, memory, hand-eye coordination and creativity. The COPPA-compliant app is due to launch on iOS and Android devices in five languages: Spanish, English, French, Italian and Portuguese.

This project is well-suited to Edujoy’s specialty in educational and kid-friendly mobile games. It has developed more than 100 such apps, including Hello Kitty Educational Games, Masha and the Bear Game Zone and Tiny Friends Aquarium.

The Smurfs might be more than 50 years old, but the brand shows no sign of slowing down. IMPS and LAFIG signed a deal last year with LA-based OTTera to launch FAST channels featuring the brand’s classic 2D-animated content from the ’60s and ’80s in Q4.
