US nonprofit org Fred Rogers Productions (FRP) has launched a five-year initiative for emerging BIPOC writers called Writers’ Neighborhood.

The initiative includes an eight-week program in which eight writers will learn important screenwriting techniques. Participants will attend workshops—including classes on how to find and get work in the industry—and interact with screenwriters and producers of FRP series such as Donkey Hodie (pictured), Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and Alma’s Way. They will also have the opportunity to network and participate in industry events.

The Writers’ Neighborhood initiative is an extension of an FRP pilot program that launched last fall. In this test run, eight writers were mentored by screenwriters including Rosemary Contreras (Dora the Explorer story editor), Dana Chan (Alma’s Way story editor) and Tim McKeon (Odd Squad co-creator). Many of the participants are now writing for FRP series such as Alma’s Way, as well as working on other projects at Nickelodeon and Netflix.

FRP will be accepting applications for Writers’ Neighborhood online from May 1 to 15.
