Paramount+ is fueling up to boldly go where no man has gone before…again. The streamer has ordered a new live-action series based on the iconic sci-fi franchise called Star Trek: Starfleet Academy—this time aiming for a teen/YA audience.

Navigating coming-of-age themes, the series centers on a class of teenage Starfleet cadets enrolled in an elite pilot training school. CBS Studios is producing the project with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.

Gaia Violo (Absentia) will write the script for a first episode, with Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau (Star Trek: Discovery) attached as showrunners. They will also executive produce the series with Violo, Aaron Baiers, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa and John Weber.

Starfleet Academy is poised to bring “new generations of viewers and long-term Star Trek fans alike together to enjoy the next chapter in the iconic Star Trek universe,” said Paramount Streaming’s CMO and head of data Domenic DiMeglio in a release.

Paramount has reignited the Star Trek brand with several new TV projects in recent years (Picard, Lower Decks), making a notable move to bring younger audiences into the fold with Star Trek: Prodigy. Paramount+ and Nickelodeon launched this CG-animated kids series in 2021.

Paramount+ has also been busy expanding its YA programming slate lately. A Zoey 102 movie is in the works at Nickelodeon, and a new series from Awesomeness TV called School Spirits launched this month.
