Epic Games has partnered with Japan’s Toei Animation to launch its second anime-themed event in the multiplayer game Fortnite, this time focusing on the iconic martial arts anime series Dragon Ball

Fortnite x Dragon Ball begins on August 19 and runs until the end of the month. Players will be able to visit well-known locations from the series on a new custom-built addition to the game’s map called Adventure Island. They can also watch episodes and complete quests to earn new items for customizing their characters, including a dragon glider and dragon radar backpack.

Since Fortnite launched in 2017, Epic has collaborated on limited-run events in the game with several youth and family brands, including Marvel, DC Comics, Ghostbusters, Star Wars and Monopoly. Last year, the company partnered with Japanese animation studio Pierrot on Fortnite‘s first anime-themed event, releasing new characters from the series Naruto in the game. The majority of Fortnite‘s more than 400 million registered users participate in a style of game called battle royale, where 100 players compete using scavenged weapons and equipment they find around the game’s map until only one player remains. For branded collaborations, Epic changes up the battle royale format by including new weapons and vehicles, such as Dragon Ball’s Nimbus Cloud and the Kamehameha special attack.

According to Statista, Epic generated US$5.1 billion in gross revenue last year, and that figure is projected to hit US$6.27 billion in 2022 on the strength of Fortnite‘s performance and game licenses for Epic’s Unreal Engine technology. While the game is free to play, one of the primary ways Fortnite makes money is from players purchasing new outfits and weapon skins for their characters, and seasonal battle passes with 100 tiers of exclusive rewards.

The latest feature film in the Dragon Ball franchise, Dragon Ball Super: Super Herohas also made waves at the Japanese box office, grossing more than US$14.5 million since its debut in June. LA-based anime streamer Crunchyroll will distribute the CG-animated pic in theaters across North America starting in late August.
