Looney Tunes gets its first fully animated theatrical feature

Warner Bros. Animation is developing a 2D film based on the iconic IP.

The evergreen Looney Tunes franchise is heading back to the big screen. Warner Bros. Animation is producing The Day The Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie (pictured), which is targeting a Q2 2024 release.

British indie GFM Animation has signed on to manage worldwide sales and will be taking the project to the American Film Market 2023 in LA next week to secure global distribution.

“Independents rarely get to work on movies with such affinity awareness from fans worldwide, and we know they are going to love Porky and Daffy’s sci-fi adventure just as much as we do,” noted GFM chairman Guy Collins.

Porky Pig and Daffy Duck—a fan-favorite pairing thanks to their odd-couple dynamic—headline this buddy comedy, which is set against the backdrop of an alien invasion.

Cartoon Network Studios/WB Animation president Sam Register (Teen Titans Go!) and director Pete Browngardt (Looney Tunes Cartoons) are executive producing the film. Alex Kirwan (My Life as a Teenage Robot) is supervising producer.

Surprisingly, The Day The Earth Blew Up marks the first time the IP is expanding into a fully animated feature-length film for a theatrical audience. Previously, the Looney Tunes characters have starred in theatrical features that blended animation with live-action, most famously the 1996 sports flick Space Jam, which was a box office hit grossing more than US$250 million worldwide. It preceded Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003), Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021) and the upcoming Coyote vs. Acme, a live-action/animated feature about Wile E. Coyote’s attempt to sue the Acme Corporation (no set release date).
