Zynga and Disney partner for new Star Wars game

The social gaming company will develop a new mobile game and take over the live service operations of the Star Wars: Commander game.

San Francisco-based gaming developer Zynga has signed a multi-year deal with Disney to develop and publish a new free-to-play Star Wars mobile game.

Zynga’s UK-based NaturalMotion studios will develop the new game, and take over the live service operations of Disney’s Star Wars: Commander (pictured), a free-to-play game launched in 2014. The agreement also includes an option for Zynga to produce a second Star Wars-themed mobile game.

The licensing deal is part of Zynga’s plan to tap into new franchises and grow its live services. Other properties from the developer include Farmville, Cityville and Words with Friends.

Disney continues to build out its galaxy with a number Star Wars series, the latest being the anime-inspired Star Wars Resistance. The new show is set to fly to Disney Channel US, the DisneyNOW app and Disney Channel VOD on October 7. The popular toon Star Wars Rebels, meanwhile, is in its fourth season. And Disney and Lucasfilm released a series of original animated shorts and a full product line from Hasbro last year based on its female-centric brand Star Wars Forces of Destiny.
